4 tips for a more sustainable web solution

Vasser cares about sustainability and how we can make the world a better place to be. How can we make our environmental footprint as small as possible, without it affecting our clients' solutions? How can we make web solutions today and in the future more environmentally friendly? Since no "out of the box" solution for this exists today, we treat it as a chosen direction we continuously work to improve.

With such a goal, there are some areas we constantly monitor and want to improve along the way. Some areas we can already do something about today.

1. Accessibility

Content that is relevant and easy to find means the user has fewer pages to search through. This in turn means fewer unnecessary server calls, and fewer resources downloaded (images, videos and more) using bandwidth. All these small savings add up to a lot over time.

2. Optimisation and speed

Sustainability and page speed go hand in hand. A website that uses few resources and runs energy-efficiently requires less processing power. This means the site affects energy consumption less negatively and reduces the carbon footprint. Customers expect to get the content they are after almost immediately. Resource-light websites load faster, help avoid bounces, and make customers more engaged and satisfied.

3. Design and user experience

Sustainable design is design that considers user patterns, usability and accessibility alike. Good, accessible web solutions increase the value of the website because it works largely regardless of the user's hardware. Mobile-adapted websites focused on avoiding heavy resources really meant for large screens make especially big differences in energy savings.

4. Server

The servers storing the web solution's files require power 24 hours a day. One of the most important things you can do is use a server provider focused on renewable energy. For now, unfortunately, there are not many providers to choose between here. At Vasser we continuously keep watch and are ready to make changes as soon as good solutions come along.
